DOOM Breaks
You know the drill by this point: MP3s available until I take them down. Listen ... Buy ... Support Artists. Requests encouraged. Feedback a must - make this two way.
"DOOM Breaks"
From Pro Celebrity Golf & Jay Glaze - "Three Sinister Syllables" (Chopped Herring Records 2004).
He came to destroy rap, but ended up redeeming it.
Its nearly impossible to explain MF DOOM to people who don't already know his backstory. You have to start with KMD, then get into his brother Subroc's tragic death, the Black Bastards debacle, the innumerable aliases/alter egos, the quasi-fascist "Fantastic Four" subtexts, the monster movie infatuation, the off-kilter un-quantized beats, the left field samples. And then, after all that, you gotta explain the mask. (Check out my man's limited edition perforated Rod Lavers in this pic.) So many articles have already done it better than I can, so I'll just direct you to any one of those.
Equally difficult to explain is the CD today's selection draws from. "Three Sinister Syllables" is a whacked out collage of bad British TV dialogue, weird country music, movie soundtracks, and break after break after break. In the middle of all the madness, Golf & Glaze take time out for a seven-plus minute long tribute to DOOM, mixing together many of the breaks used on Operation Doomsday (OOP), "Madvillainy", and King Geedorah's "Take Me to Your Leader." Some of the samples are well known - check Yusef Lateef's "Eastern Market" or Quincy Jones' "One Hundred Ways," for example - while others are completely...well, they're completely DOOM.
As for DOOM, buy doubles of every one of his albums. Genius needs to be encouraged - at least until DOOM wraps up that 2005 MacArthur Grant. Look for more DOOM breaks in coming posts.
